Intel is expected to debut
Woodcrest, its first dual-core eighth-generation server and workstation chip on June 26th. 65nm process, 4MB L2 cache - it's good stuff, and the Xeon replacement.
ThinkSecret reports that Apple is targetting July for a release of the new Intel-based Xserve, to be based on this forthcoming server chip.
It has long been expected that the forthcoming Intel-based Power Macs (
likely to be called "Mac Pro," moving forward) will use Intel's new Core 2 Duo (formerly referred to as "Conroe"). The Core 2 Duo is expected in July, making speculation that Apple will roll out its new pro towers at its World Wide Developer Conference in August quite a possible scenario.
